Armed Services YMCA of the USA
The Armed Services YMCA of the USA, with an Employer Identification Number (EIN) of 952486118, is a nonprofit organization dedicated to serving active-duty junior enlisted military service members and their families across all six branches of the U.S. Armed Forces: Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, Space Force, and Coast Guard. It represents the oldest military support organization in the United States, established in 1861 during the American Civil War.
History
The Armed Services YMCA has a rich history that dates back to 1861 when volunteers provided relief and comfort to sick and wounded soldiers during the Civil War. Initially, volunteers offered aid at military encampments near the front lines, eventually accompanying soldiers onto battlefields. Over the years, the organization expanded its services through various conflicts, including the Spanish-American War, World War I, and World War II. It played a significant role in the formation of the United Services Organizations (USO) during World War II and continued providing support throughout the Korean and Vietnam conflicts.
In the mid-1970s, the organization refocused on delivering its unique services directly to the military community, outside of the USO framework. By 1983, it reorganized as the Armed Services YMCA of the USA and was chartered as a National Member Association of the YMCA of the USA. The organization has since become the YMCA's representative for the Department of Defense.
Mission and Services
The Armed Services YMCA focuses on enhancing the lives of military members and their families through programs aimed at youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. These services are designed to complement and supplement those provided by the Armed Forces, both on and off military installations. The organization prioritizes serving junior enlisted personnel and their families but offers services to other military personnel when resources permit.
Programs
A notable program administered by the Armed Services YMCA is the Department of Defense's (DoD) Military Outreach Initiative, established in 2008. This initiative offers no-cost fitness facility memberships and respite child care services to eligible active-duty military personnel and their families. The program aims to promote family resilience and mission readiness.
Structure and Impact
The Armed Services YMCA operates through 12 branches and 23 affiliate partners, serving 89 military installations across the U.S. The organization provides its services at no or low cost and does not require membership fees or dues. As a high-rated charity, it is committed to fiscal responsibility and transparency. The Armed Services YMCA collaborates with military commands and community organizations to ensure comprehensive support for military families.
Values
The organization is guided by Christian principles and a holistic approach to developing and promoting healthy spirit, mind, and body. It strives to be inclusive, treating everyone with compassion and respect, while honoring the service and commitment of military personnel and their families. The Armed Services YMCA collaborates with other entities to ensure excellence in all its endeavors.
