WHERE HISTORY MEETS ADVENTURE Mamakating was the first township in Sullivan County. It grew from settlements along current Route 209arguably the oldest engineered roadway in the United States. image courtesy of the OW Historical Society From the 1850s until the 1950s Mamakating held canals and railroads that were key in furthering the countrys industrial expansion. Across the town are remnants from settlement of European immigrants such as cemeteries places of worship and storefronts that have been in business since the 1800s and continue to this day.
