June is officially National Adopt a Cat Month. We are starting out pretty overwhelmed with the needs, but want to help educate and support where we can. Let’s start off with a HOT topic: FREE KITTENS! What a deal, right? Handing off free kittens may feel like a solution and gets rid of your immediate problem, but this is handing off the problem of unplanned litters and multipying kittens to someone else. If you keep mom and/or dad and aren’t able to get them altered, you’ll also be in the same issue again in 3-6 months. When people call us for help with spay and neuter or surrendering we hear: "We took in this kitten from a lady to help her out, but we really can't afford to get her fixed." “We got a free kitten and haven’t had time or money to get her spayed.” “This cat showed up at our door and now had babies and I can’t care for them.” At least they called, MOST do not. 😢 Please reach out for help and fill out a stray or surrender form. We will do our best to take into rescue. CCAR does NOT euthanize for space or length of time in care. CCAR does NOT charge a surrender fee. If you’re able to donate to help with cost of care we appreciate it, but do not expect or require. CCAR does all we can to secure mama cats (and dads too!) so they can also be altered and vaccinated and find new homes if needed. Please stop and think before handing off free kittens OR taking in free kittens you can’t afford. You can safely rehome kittens/cats yourself with an adoption process once altered, but we would encourage you to reach out to a shelter or rescue for guidance on how to do so safely, Ir better yet, surrender to have volunteers with experience and process to do so. We all need to be aware of the bigger picture and work together to MAKE SURE these mom cats and kittens are all getting fixed before landing in a home. It is not just the new owner's responsibility. It is not just the old owner's responsibility. It's not just a volunteer organization's responsibility. It is EVERYONE's responsibility to make sure spay/neuter happen. “Do the best you can until you know better.
