HESTER J HODGDON LIBRARIES FOR ALL PROGRAM

The Hester J. Hodgdon Libraries for all Foundation (HJH Foundation) supports sustainable community development and educational opportunities in rural Nicaraguan communities. Our public lending library and Mobile Project in San Juan del Sur, in collaboration with Rotary International and other service organizations, develop programs to strengthen local schools, support community development and leadership, and offer educational and trade learning opportunities. The HJH Libraries for All Foundation is a Colorado-based, tax exempt, charitable foundation that leverages the power of education and literacy to enhance community vitality.

Hester J Hodgdon Libraries for All Program
Overview

The Hester J Hodgdon Libraries for All Program is a US-based nonprofit organization founded in 2003 to support the San Juan del Sur Biblioteca Pública y Móvil in Nicaragua. The organization is dedicated to promoting literacy and establishing sustainable lending libraries throughout Nicaragua and Central America.

History

The program was initiated by Jane Mirandette, who began a lending library in San Juan del Sur in 2001. Recognizing the absence of lending libraries in Nicaragua, Mirandette started a small library from her hotel patio. The library expanded over time and eventually became the first lending library in the country.

Programs and Services
  • San Juan del Sur Biblioteca Pública y Móvil: This is the flagship library supported by the program. It offers a collection of over 12,000 books, a media room, and spaces for educational and public health activities.

  • Mobile Project: Started as part of the main library's outreach, this program now serves 37 rural communities monthly, providing books and educational activities to children who would otherwise lack access to such resources.

  • Library in a Box Program: Established in 2005, this program assists in creating lending libraries and community centers by providing a starter collection of books and training materials.

  • 3D Printing Program: The San Juan del Sur Biblioteca installed a 3D printing center, Sueños3D, in 2019. It serves as a hub for teaching and learning 3D printing technology.

  • Satellite Library Program: In partnership with Opportunity Tree International, the program has set up mini-libraries in rural schools served by the Mobile Project.

  • Service Learning Programs: These include university credit courses, mission trips, and family and youth trips that offer experiential learning opportunities.

  • Volunteer Opportunities: Volunteers can assist with library operations, the Mobile Project, and educational activities.

  • GRIP Program: Offers young people a gap year service learning experience focused on building intercultural relationships and sustainable community projects.

What I appreciate most about Eduo is its neutrality and inclusivity. It doesn't push any agenda — just provides tools for people to explore and support what matters to them.
