Description

Ducks Unlimited, Inc.

Ducks Unlimited, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to the conservation of wetlands and associated habitats for waterfowl, other wildlife, and people in North America.

History

Founded in 1937 during the Dust Bowl, Ducks Unlimited was established to address the drastic decline in North America's waterfowl populations. The organization was formed by a group of sportsmen and conservation philanthropists, led by Joseph P. Knapp, who recognized the urgent need to protect and restore habitats necessary for waterfowl survival. The initial incorporation in the United States was followed by the establishment of Ducks Unlimited Canada in March 1937.

Mission

The mission of Ducks Unlimited is centered on habitat conservation. The organization works to conserve, restore, and manage wetlands and associated habitats for North America's waterfowl. These efforts not only benefit waterfowl but also support other wildlife and people. Ducks Unlimited has a long-term vision of ensuring wetlands are sufficient to fill the skies with waterfowl today and forever.

Activities and Impact

Ducks Unlimited achieves its mission through diverse public and private partnerships. It collaborates with government agencies, corporations, NGOs, landowners, and private citizens to restore and manage degraded wetlands and prevent further destruction of existing habitats. Over the years, Ducks Unlimited has conserved more than 18 million acres of waterfowl habitat across North America.

The organization's financial structure is supported by a combination of sources, including federal and state habitat reimbursements, conservation easements, membership fees, donations, and event revenues. Ducks Unlimited hosts over 4,000 grassroots fundraising events annually, which are crucial to its operations.

Leadership and Members

Ducks Unlimited is a grassroots, volunteer-based organization with approximately 700,000 members and 40,000 volunteers across North America. The organization has been led by key figures such as Chuck Smith, President, and Adam Putnam, CEO.

Programs and Outreach

In addition to habitat restoration, Ducks Unlimited engages in environmental education, research, and advocacy. The organization supports academic programs like the Endowed Chair in Wetland and Waterfowl Conservation in partnership with the University of Saskatchewan. It also produces "Ducks Unlimited TV," a show highlighting waterfowl hunting and conservation efforts.

Financial Performance

In its 2019 fiscal year, Ducks Unlimited generated over $201 million in revenue, with a significant portion allocated directly to habitat conservation efforts.

International Expansion

While its core focus is on North America, Ducks Unlimited has expanded its influence through sister organizations in countries like Mexico, as well as in regions such as Latin America, New Zealand, and Australia.
