Watch TU get western in our newest film “Horses and Highwater,” which documents our efforts with the U.S. Forest Service to restore a portion of Tincup Creek by hand, foot, hoof, and helicopter. Tincup Creek is a major tributary to the Salt River—found in Wyoming and Idaho—and is one of few tributaries that flows year-round, has good connectivity, and still holds the full native fish assemblage. Due to the remote nature of this area in Caribou-Targhee National Forest, supplies were transported by helicopter. Draft horse teams and Wyoming Conservation Corps hand crews constructed log structures to capture cobble and sediment mobilized during spring runoff to elevate riffles and raise the down-cut creek. Elevating the stream will reconnect it to its floodplain and improve stream function, reduce erosion, enrich habitat conditions, and improve groundwater storage and late-season flows. These efforts will enhance habitat for native Snake River cutthroat trout, northern leatherside chub, boreal toad, western pearl shell mussels, and bluehead suckers, which are all native species with special management emphasis. In a late-night move during yesterday’s House Natural Resources Committee markup, Reps. Mark Amodei (R-NV) and Celeste Maloy (R-UT) introduced an amendment to sell off hundreds of thousands of acres of public lands in Nevada and Utah. The committee voted to advance the reconciliation bill to the House floor. This amendment sets a dangerous precedent for the future of America’s public lands. Budget reconciliation isn’t the place to make decisions about public land sales—especially without transparency or public input. Existing laws, regulations, and processes in place already exist to facilitate the disposal of suitable parcels of public land when it is in the public’s interest. “There is a time and a place for everything. There are mechanisms that allow for proper consideration of federal land transactions, ensuring adequate consideration and public input," said Trout Unlimited's President and CEO Chris Wood. "The time for selling off hundreds of thousands of acres of public lands is not right before midnight, and the place to do so is certainly not in a tax bill. Public lands are the backyard of the little guy. Dark of night actions such as this could transition them to the playground of the wealthy.” Trout Unlimited strongly opposes efforts like this to sell off America’s public lands, especially when those efforts lack transparency and disregard public process. While this amendment passed committee, the fight to stop the sale of public lands is far from over. We need you now more than ever. Stand up for public lands: https://bit.ly/4ceqOq9 (fb)
