The mission of the Denyce Graves Foundation (DGF) is to promote equity and inclusion in American classical vocal arts through an unprecedented approach: championing the hidden musical figures of the past while uplifting young artists of world-class talent from all backgrounds with an emphasis on historically marginalized communities. As a nonprofit organization at the intersection of social justice, American history, and the arts, DGF seeks to expand the public’s understanding of the rich, multicultural history of classical music by bringing the stories of our nation's hidden musical figures to light. Denyce Graves Foundation Inc
Gilda Cruz-Romo (1940–2025) 🇲🇽 Born in Guadalajara and trained at the Mexico City Conservatory, this powerhouse soprano debuted in 1962 (Die Walküre) and ascended quickly—New York City Opera in 1969 (Mefistofele), then the Metropolitan Opera in 1970 as Cio-Cio-San. She went on to give 160+ Met performances (1970–1984) in cornerstone roles including Aida, La traviata, Il trovatore, Otello, Don Carlo, Tosca, and La forza del destino. Cruz-Romo lit up stages across the United States, including Chicago, Houston, Dallas, San Francisco, New Orleans, Boston, New York Philadelphia, and Baltimore.
