Today, on Memorial Day, we honor the brave Lakota Code Talkers — unsung heroes who served this country with courage and brilliance, even as their own people were being silenced and oppressed. During World Wars I and II, the U.S. military relied on Native languages, including Lakota, to create unbreakable codes that saved countless American lives. These men—many from the Oglala Lakota Nation—risked everything, serving in harsh conditions overseas while still facing racism and discrimination at home. In the trenches and jungles, they carried not only rifles, but their culture, their language, and the hopes of their people. Their story is one of resilience, sacrifice, and injustice. Despite their critical contributions, Lakota Code Talkers returned to reservations where basic needs went unmet, where they were forgotten by the very government they defended. Their service is a powerful reminder that Indigenous people have always stepped up to protect this land, even when this land has failed to protect them in return.
