Civil Air Patrol

Follow Message Edit

For more than 50 years, the Civil Air Patrol has aggressively performed the missions Congress mandated in 1946: Aerospace Education, Cadet Programs, and Emergency Services. Aerospace Education America's love of manned flight started with the Wright brothers and continues unabated during this century. World War II showcased the important role aviation would play in the future and national leaders recognized the importance of stimulating public interest in aerospace activities. CAP, as the civilian Auxiliary of the U.S. Air Force, was most suited to perform this mission. Their efforts focused on two different audiences - internal CAP members and the general public. Aerospace educators working out of CAP's National Headquarters at Maxwell AFB, Ala., provide materials that are current and reflect the highest standards of educational excellence. The congressional charter also tasked CAP to stimulate public interest in aerospace issues. These external programs are primarily conducted through our nation's education systems. These workshops highlight basic aerospace knowledge and focus on advances in aerospace technology. Textbooks, learning tools, and visual aids geared to stimulate interest in aerospace matters also are provided for teachers to use in their classrooms. Started in 1951, these workshops have reached hundreds of thousands of young people. CAP also plans and executes the National Congress on Aviation and Space Education. NCASE is the premier aerospace education conference held in the nation. The NCASE is designed to promote an understanding of aviation and space education to motivate and encourage teachers to incorporate aerospace education into their curriculum. It also encourages aerospace leaders to speak out on aerospace issues facing our nation today.

Civil Air Patrol

The Civil Air Patrol (CAP) is a congressionally chartered, federally supported non-profit corporation that serves as the official civilian auxiliary of the United States Air Force. Founded on December 1, 1941, CAP was initially established to mobilize civilian aviation resources for national defense, but it has evolved into a prominent public service organization. CAP operates in all 50 states, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and the District of Columbia, with more than 1,500 units across the country.

Mission and Vision

Civil Air Patrol's mission is to support America's communities through emergency response, diverse aviation and ground services, youth development, and promotion of air, space, and cyber power. The organization's vision emphasizes community support, aerospace education, and youth development. CAP's core values are integrity, volunteer service, excellence, and respect.

Structure

CAP is organized along military lines, with a hierarchical structure that includes national headquarters, regions, wings, and squadrons. The organization is divided into eight geographical regions, each comprising one wing per state plus Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia. Wings are further divided into groups and squadrons.

Missions

Civil Air Patrol conducts numerous missions supporting national and local needs:

  • Aerospace Education: CAP provides educational programs and resources focusing on aviation and STEM fields.
  • Cadet Programs: The organization offers leadership and aerospace education programs for youth, known as cadets.
  • Emergency Services: CAP members engage in search and rescue operations, disaster relief, and support for law enforcement agencies.

In addition to these primary missions, CAP participates in counterdrug operations, provides aerial support for the U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Drug Enforcement Administration, and U.S. Forest Service, and conducts low-altitude route surveys and damage assessments. CAP's missions also include humanitarian services, such as transporting medical supplies and personnel.

Operations and Fleet

Civil Air Patrol operates the world's largest fleet of single-engine aircraft, which is used for search and rescue, disaster response, and educational purposes. The fleet includes over 600 aircraft and 1,700 unmanned aircraft systems (drones). CAP's fleet supports Air Force training exercises and is often used to maintain air defense readiness.

History

During World War II, CAP played a crucial role in national defense, contributing over 500,000 flying hours, sinking two enemy submarines, and saving numerous lives. In recognition of its wartime efforts, the World War II members of Civil Air Patrol were awarded the Congressional Gold Medal in December 2014.

Members and Partnerships

With over 60,000 members, including more than 28,000 cadets and 38,000 adult volunteers, CAP is recognized by the U.S. Air Force as part of the Total Force. CAP works closely with federal agencies, assisting in homeland security and disaster relief efforts. The Civil Air Patrol-US Air Force (CAP-USAF) provides oversight and support to CAP's operations, ensuring alignment with Air Force policies and standards.
