Small, secretive, and found nowhere else on Earth, the Salado Salamander is a Hill Country original—and it's in trouble. These endangered amphibians rely on clean, flowing groundwater. But with growing development and threats to our aquifers, their habitat is disappearing. In 2023, the Salado Salamander was officially listed as endangered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service—a vital step in the fight to protect this unique species. We are actively monitoring Salado Salamander populations at our Pecan Springs Karst Preserve and working with partners to restore their habitat, because when we protect land, we protect everything that depends on it.
