If you’ve ever heard strange cat-like growls near the mangroves, raise your hand ✋🏻 The culprit is likely the Green Heron. These birds make harsh ‘skeow’ calls when perched, flying, or when their nesting territory is disturbed by a predator. You might not see them but they sure see you and they’ll make it known. It may seem uncommon to see a Green Heron, but they’re actually pretty common and widespread, they just prefer the privacy of vegetation or to lurk at the edges of shallow water where they use a sit-and-wait strategy to catch their prey. • 📸: Kylie Thomasen • Image Description: A Green Heron, with its neck tucked in, peers down from its perch on a branch.
