Today, the luthiers are working on sound posts with their teacher, Tchoupy Hylaris. 30 participants (15 for strings, 15 for band instruments - all recipients of BLUME Haiti partial scholarships), representing 13 music schools from five of Haiti's ten provinces. This hands-on training is a key investment in the sustainability of music programs across the country, ensuring that instruments stay in playing condition and in the hands of children and their teachers. Today marks the start of a four-day band and string instrument repair workshop in Haiti’s Greater South! We are proud to welcome 30 participants — 15 for strings, 15 for winds — representing 13 music schools from across all the southern provinces of Haiti. These musicians and teachers have come together to build vital repair skills, ensuring the instruments in their schools are brought back to life and kept in playable condition. Because of escalating gang violence, Haiti’s southern provinces are now almost completely cut off from the capital, and over 1 million people have been forced from their homes. Despite enormous challenges, these music schools remain committed to providing children and young people with access to music education — a lifeline of hope, resilience, and connection. Under the expert guidance of BLUME Haiti staff — Herold Jean-Pierre, trained in France and Belgium through MUSIC FUND and supported with the help of The Rotary Club of Naperville, and Tchoupy Hylaris, trained in Haiti and Cremona, Italy (birthplace of the violin) thanks to Luthiers Sans Frontières - UK and Music Fund — participants will gain essential basic and intermediate repair skills. With this knowledge, they will help restore and preserve their schools’ instrument collections, ensuring that the music — and the joy it brings — continues for years to come.
