DENVER CENTER FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS
As a non-profit theatre organization, we create, share, teach, and perform for our community. We engage and inspire through the transformative power of live theatre.

The Denver Center for the Performing Arts (DCPA) is a prominent nonprofit organization dedicated to producing and presenting professional live theatre in Denver, Colorado. Established in 1972, the DCPA has grown into one of the largest nonprofit theatre organizations in the United States, offering a diverse range of theatrical productions, Broadway touring shows, acting classes, and community education programs[2][3][4].
History
The DCPA’s inception is closely tied to a visionary initiative by Donald Seawell, who, inspired by the abandoned Denver Municipal Auditorium and surrounding blocks at 14th and Curtis streets, envisioned a world-class performing arts complex. This vision led to the creation of what is now the Denver Performing Arts Complex, a four-block, 12-acre site that houses ten performance venues with over 10,000 seats, making it one of the largest single-site performing arts centers globally[1][4].
Construction began in December 1974, with significant landmarks including the Boettcher Concert Hall, the Helen G. Bonfils Theatre Complex, and the Ellie Caulkins Opera House—all part of the initial build-out. The Temple Hoyne Buell Theatre opened in 1991, followed by the Seawell Grand Ballroom in 1998 and the Weeks Conservatory Theatre in 2002. The Ellie Caulkins Opera House underwent a major renovation and reopened in 2005 to critical acclaim[1][4].
In the 1980s, the organization formalized its operational structure through an agreement with the City of Denver, wherein the city managed the physical grounds and facilities, while the DCPA concentrated on theatre programming and production. The DCPA continues to manage its administrative offices and the Bonfils Theatre Complex, home to the Denver Center Theatre Company—its resident professional theatre company founded in 1979[1][4].
Activities and Programs
The Denver Center for the Performing Arts produces and presents a wide range of theatre offerings. These include:
- Locally produced original and classic plays by the Denver Center Theatre Company
- Broadway touring productions
- Cabaret and Off-Center performances, providing innovative theatrical experiences
- Educational programs designed to engage the community and nurture new talent
The organization’s mission centers on engaging and inspiring audiences through the transformative power of live theatre, making it a vital cultural institution in Denver and beyond[2][3][5].
Overall, the Denver Center for the Performing Arts stands as a cornerstone of the performing arts community, fostering creativity, education, and entertainment through its vast facilities and dynamic programming.
