Ka Hula O 'Aulani
Ka Hula O 'Aulani is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to the promotion, preservation, and perpetuation of Hawaiian hula dance along with the associated traditions, culture, handicrafts, and language. Founded in 2018, the organization aims to provide educational opportunities to the public, fostering a deeper appreciation for hula and its rich cultural heritage.
Mission and Vision
The mission of Ka Hula O 'Aulani is to share and honor the traditions of hula, advancing towards a vision of a world connected through aloha and mutual respect. By focusing on cultural education and the preservation of traditional practices, the organization seeks to bridge communities and promote cross-cultural understanding.
Background
'Aulani, the founder, became deeply engaged with hula in 2006 after attending a class with Kumu Leilanileikukuiokalani Ishii. Her journey in hula led her to perform at various events and eventually earn the title of 'Alaka'i (leader). Her studies continued under renowned hula instructor Lehua Kawaikapuokalani Hewett, who is recognized for his contributions to hula and Hawaiian cultural heritage. 'Aulani also pursued studies in ho'ola under Kumu Ho'ola Suzi Kaiona'okalani Ko, further enriching her knowledge of traditional practices such as lomilomi and lā‘au lapa‘au.
Activities and Events
Ka Hula O 'Aulani offers educational programs and workshops focused on hula, as well as related cultural activities. The organization hosts events like Hula Hiehie O Na Kūpuna, which celebrates kūpuna (elders) performing hula, and provides a platform for intergenerational cultural exchange.
Through its activities, Ka Hula O 'Aulani strengthens the community's bond with Hawaiian culture, fostering a sense of family ('ohana) and shared values rooted in the spirit of aloha.
