Owámniyomni Okhódayapi
Overview

Owámniyomni Okhódayapi is a Dakota-led nonprofit organization with the mission of creating a future where Dakota culture remains vibrant and integral to communal existence. It emphasizes the importance of Dakota values, such as mni wičóni (water is life), in restoring and educating the community[1][4].

History and Purpose

Historically, Owámniyomni is known as St. Anthony Falls by European settlers, but its significance extends far beyond this label. For the Dakota people, this site is referred to as Owámniyomni, meaning "turbulent waters," and holds deep spiritual and ceremonial importance. It was a place for gathering, trade, and sacred rituals, connecting individuals with their ancestors and the natural world[3].

The organization aims to transform five acres of land at the Upper Lock area into a hub for healing, restoration, education, and connection, reflecting traditional Dakota values. This project seeks to rectify historical injustices and erasure by reclaiming and honoring the site's sacredness for future generations[1][3].

Mission and Activities

Owámniyomni Okhódayapi serves as a model for Native-led initiatives, demonstrating an operational framework rooted in Indigenous traditions. The organization actively engages with the community, fostering support and education about Dakota history and culture. It also collaborates with other entities to promote widespread understanding and respect for Native American heritage[2][4].

Financials

As of 2023, Owámniyomni Okhódayapi reported $3.04 million in revenue, with expenses of approximately $990,000. The organization's total assets were valued at $8.31 million, with liabilities totaling $23,400[5].

Community Impact

By revitalizing a sacred site, Owámniyomni Okhódayapi not only preserves cultural heritage but also encourages community involvement and advocacy. The project brings attention to the historical significance of places like Owámniyomni, fostering a broader appreciation for Indigenous perspectives and values[1][2].
