Switzer Learning Center

Overview

The Switzer Learning Center is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that serves as a nonpublic school, dedicated to providing specialized education and therapeutic support to students with autism and other special needs. Established in 1966, the center is located in Torrance, California, and focuses on fostering academic growth and social confidence in its students.

Programs and Services

Switzer Learning Center offers a comprehensive range of programs designed to cater to students in grades K-12 (ages 5-22). The center provides individualized learning plans tailored to each student's needs, combining traditional and non-traditional educational approaches.

  • Individualized Learning Programs: These include both diploma-track and certificate-track educational options, emphasizing evidence-based curriculum and STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics) programming to encourage real-world learning.

  • Integrated Clinical Services: Offered services include speech and language therapy, ABA-based interventions, behavioral counseling, and art therapy. These services are integrated into each student's Individualized Education Plan (IEP).

  • Enrichment Programs: These programs include art, music, drama, and hands-on STEAM activities. Additionally, the center offers educational field trips to further enrich student experiences.

  • Switzer Social (PEERS® Social Skills Programming): This program uses evidence-based interventions developed at UCLA to teach social skills to teens and young adults, focusing on peer interactions and relationship building.

  • Self-Advocacy and Independent Living (SAIL) Transition Program: Designed for transitioning adults aged 18-22, this program builds life and work skills, communication, and relationship-building capabilities.

Funding and Support

Switzer Learning Center relies on donations and grants from individuals, foundations, and businesses to cover its operational costs, as contracted services from local school districts only cover about 70% of these expenses. Donations can be made through various means, including monetary contributions, in-kind donations, stock transfers, and planned gifts.

Mission

The mission of Switzer Learning Center is to educate diverse minds, build social confidence, and create a path to independence. The organization aims to unlock each child's potential through targeted interventions and nurturing support, guiding them from the start of their educational journey through preparation for college or vocational school.

Community Impact

Switzer Learning Center serves students throughout Los Angeles County, including those from historically excluded communities and foster care homes. The center's commitment goes beyond education to support students with special needs, helping them navigate social interactions effectively and prepare for real-world challenges.
