It's almost time for Summer Strings! Our Summer Strings summer orchestra program at @bgchspalding is taught by Hawaiʻi Symphony Orchestra cellist and HYS alumnus, Jeff Hamano. Born and raised in Hawaiʻi, Mr. Jeff Hamano has been directing the String Orchestra program at Moanalua Elementary since 2009, and has also been a cello instructor at Punahou school since 2011! We're excited to have him once again work with our Summer Strings keiki next month! Summer Strings runs from June 2 – July 3, 2025 and is a great way for our younger students to stay engaged with music over the summer. You can learn more about Mr. Hamano on our website at https://www.hiyouthsymphony.org/instructor/jeff-hamano/. (fb)

Did you know that the saxophone is part of the woodwind family, not the brass family? Comment below if you did! 🎷 Reed instruments create sound when the vibrating reed initiates sound waves in the instrument's air column, while brass instruments make sound through the vibration of a player's lips against a mouthpiece. Though the saxophone is made of brass, it uses a wooden reed! You can watch more concert videos or learn more about how instruments create their sound through our Listen & Learn virtual concerts at https://www.hiyouthsymphony.org/concertvideos/. (fb)
