The Cabin

Overview

The Cabin is a nonprofit literary arts organization located in Boise, Idaho. It serves as the only organization in the state dedicated entirely to arts and educational activities that celebrate reading and writing. The Cabin's mission is to forge community through the voices of all readers, writers, and learners, promoting creativity, literary excellence, and a love of writing among both children and adults across the Treasure Valley and beyond.

History

The Cabin is housed in a historic log structure at 801 S Capitol Blvd. Originally, the building was constructed for the Forest Service and was later taken over by the City of Boise. In 1996, the City leased the building to The Cabin, which has managed it since then[1].

Programs

The Cabin offers a wide range of programs year-round, including writers-in-schools residencies, summer writing camps, adult writing workshops, book discussions, writing contests, and published anthologies. Additionally, it sponsors a "Readings & Conversations" series that brings renowned authors to Boise to spark community discussions on critical issues[1][5].

Equity Commitment

The Cabin emphasizes its commitment to equity, focusing on inclusive and diverse programming. It targets historically marginalized communities, ensuring their stories are told and heard. The organization engages in training on unconscious bias and racism and works strategically to enhance its diversity and inclusion efforts[2].

Community Engagement

The Cabin supports creating human connections through words, fostering a supportive community of local writers. It hosts free and open writing workshops both in-person and online, using unique prompts designed to inspire creativity. These workshops are led by local writers and guest authors, encouraging a shared love of reading and writing[3]. The Cabin also participates in broader community activities, partnering with local entities to promote literary arts and inclusivity[2].
