Description

Sigma Phi Lambda Inc

Sigma Phi Lambda Inc, also known as Sigma Phi Lambda (ΣΦΛ) or Phi Lamb, is a Christian sorority organization based in the United States. It was founded in 1988 at the University of Texas at Austin by Patricia Adams Hogan, Robin Maedgen, Gina Williams Goveas, Jacqueline Goveas, and Eileen Howell Barlow.

History and Purpose

Sigma Phi Lambda is part of a broader movement to establish Christian Greek organizations during the mid-1980s. It was established in response to the growth of the Evangelical Christian movement in the U.S. and provides a community focused on spiritual development and sisterhood. Unlike many traditional sororities, Sigma Phi Lambda is non-denominational and non-Panhellenic, allowing members to hold affiliations with other sororities.

Organization Structure

The organization operates under a national board of directors and has expanded to include numerous chapters across the United States. It emphasizes community service, leadership training, and fellowship activities, often partnering with other Christian organizations for events.

Philanthropy

Sigma Phi Lambda's national philanthropic focus is World Vision, a Christian humanitarian organization dedicated to alleviating poverty and injustice worldwide. The partnership with World Vision allows chapters to engage in various forms of community service and fundraising activities, including events like the World Vision 6K.

Financial Status

Sigma Phi Lambda Inc is classified as a 501(c)(7) organization, categorized under social and recreational clubs, specifically student sororities and fraternities. The organization's financial data is reported annually through Form 990-EZ filings, showing a mix of revenues from contributions, program services, and other sources. Donations made to the organization are not tax deductible.

Symbols and Traditions

Sigma Phi Lambda's official colors are red and white, symbolizing the blood and purity of Jesus Christ. The sorority's mascot is a lamb, reflecting its nickname "Phi Lamb," which is inspired by Psalm 100:3. The organization's belief statement is grounded in the Apostles' Creed, and its activities often incorporate prayer and worship.

Sigma Phi Lambda continues to grow and expand its community service efforts, focusing on spiritual growth and community engagement through its chapters across the U.S.
