On this day in history, 22 May 1942, Mexico declares war on Japan, Italy, and Germany. Although Mexico had broken off diplomatic relations with the Axis Powers after the attack on the United States in December 1941, their formal declaration of war did not come until after a German submarine sank two Mexican oil tankers. Mexico and the United States created several new treaties and cooperative opportunities during the war, including the training of Mexican Air Force units to serve with the Americans in the Pacific. These Mexican fliers, nicknamed the Aztec Eagles, provided valuable air support for bombing missions against Japanese territories, becoming the only Mexico military unit to engage in combat outside of Mexico’s borders.
