Alejandro Flores Foundation
To bridge the gap of educational inequity in LA County by supporting the students who need it most. Not only is there an increasingly widening gap in educational opportunities and outcomes in LA County, there is also a significant gap in scholarship funding available for high potential students who don’t score well using traditional metrics like GPA and standardized test scores. AFF aims to close this gap by supporting those who may not have the highest GPA or SAT scores, but display strong morals, grit and determination in the face of adversity. Lastly, we aim to honor Alexx’s memory by giving back to the communities that he called home.
Alejandro Flores Foundation
The Alejandro Flores Foundation is a non-profit organization based in Los Angeles County. Its mission is to bridge the gap in educational inequity by supporting high school and junior college students, particularly those from low-income communities, in Los Angeles and Orange Counties[1][2].
History and Purpose
The foundation was established in honor of Alejandro "Alexx" Flores, who passed away in 2020. Alexx was known for his generosity, strong work ethic, and positive contributions to his community[2]. The foundation aims to continue his legacy by providing opportunities for education to students who might otherwise face significant barriers due to financial constraints or personal circumstances.
Mission and Vision
The foundation's mission is focused on providing support to students who demonstrate grit, perseverance, and outstanding character, rather than solely on academic metrics like GPA or standardized test scores[2]. Its vision is to ensure that all students in Los Angeles have equal access to educational opportunities and outcomes, regardless of their socio-economic background[2].
Programs and Scholarships
One of the core initiatives of the Alejandro Flores Foundation is the Alexx Flores Opportunity Scholarship, which provides financial assistance to students pursuing higher education. This scholarship emphasizes the importance of determination and character over traditional academic metrics[2]. Recipients are chosen based on financial need, grit, perseverance, and outstanding character.
Impact
By targeting students in low-income communities, the foundation addresses significant disparities in educational outcomes. Students from these communities in Los Angeles are notably less likely to graduate from college compared to their peers from wealthier areas[1]. Through its scholarships and support programs, the foundation seeks to empower these students and help bridge the gap in educational inequity.
Legacy
The foundation's commitment to honoring Alexx Flores's memory by supporting students reflects his values of hard work, kindness, and community engagement. By focusing on character and determination, the foundation aims to cultivate resilient and well-rounded individuals who can succeed in their educational and professional pursuits.
