🇯🇵 Day Three of CityTrip Japan: High-Speed Connections and Cultural Bridges Our delegation traveled from Tokyo to Kyoto aboard the iconic Shinkansen bullet train, experiencing firsthand Japan’s world-class high-speed rail system. The journey sparked thoughtful conversation about how the Bay Area can learn from Japan’s investments in efficient, reliable, and rider-friendly rail infrastructure. Upon arrival in Kyoto, we visited the historic Gekkeikan Sake Brewery—a company with deep roots in both Japan and California. With a U.S. distillery in Folsom, Gekkeikan is a powerful example of international business ties that link our regions through craft, culture, and commerce. We ended the day at the breathtaking Fushimi Inari Shrine, famous for its thousands of vibrant torii gates winding through the forested hills of southern Kyoto. Walking through the shrine was a moment of awe and reflection on the enduring spirit of tradition that continues to shape Japan’s modern identity. 🇯🇵 Day Two of CityTrip Japan: Culture, Cuisine, and Tradition Our second day in Tokyo offered the delegation a deeper understanding of Japan’s rich cultural heritage and daily life—an essential foundation for building global relationships. We began the morning at Meiji Shrine, a sacred Shinto site dedicated to Emperor Meiji and Empress Shōken. Nestled in a tranquil forest in the heart of Tokyo, the shrine offered a moment of reflection and connection to Japan’s spiritual traditions and modern history. Next, we visited the bustling Tsukiji Outer Fish Market, where we explored the vibrant stalls and sampled fresh seafood. In the afternoon, the group attended the May Grand Sumo Tournament, gaining firsthand insight into one of Japan’s oldest and most respected traditions. From the ceremonial rituals to the dramatic bouts, it was a powerful expression of discipline, heritage, and national pride.
