The Woman's Exchange

The Woman's Exchange is a nonprofit organization based in New Orleans, Louisiana, with a significant history dating back to being chartered in 1881 as the Christian Woman's Exchange. Initially, it aimed to empower impoverished women by providing them with an outlet to sell handmade goods, as well as offering accommodation to women in need.

Historical Development

The Christian Woman's Exchange was the first association organized and chartered in New Orleans by women for women. Over time, the organization evolved its mission. A pivotal moment came in 1924 when it acquired the Hermann-Grima House from the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. This house had previously been owned by the Grima family.

In the 1960s, the organization began focusing on the historical preservation of the Hermann-Grima House. The open hearth kitchen was restored in 1967, and in 1971, the house was placed on the National Register of Historic Places. By 1972, the organization had shifted its purpose towards preserving and interpreting the house's historical aspects, particularly those reflecting life in New Orleans from 1830 to 1860.

Modern Mission

Today, The Woman's Exchange operates both the Hermann-Grima and Gallier Historic Houses as museums. These sites are national historic landmarks and play a crucial role in preserving 19th-century architecture and collections, facilitating discussions about the past and its relevance to the present and future.

The Woman's Exchange is governed by a mission to preserve these historical homes and promote educational and cultural activities related to them. It also oversees the preservation and interpretation of historical artifacts and settings within these properties.

Operations

As a nonprofit, The Woman's Exchange relies on volunteer and community support to maintain its operations. The organization continues to contribute to the cultural heritage of New Orleans by managing these historic houses, now popular tourist and educational destinations.

The Woman's Exchange is distinct from other organizations with similar names, such as The Woman's Exchange of St. Louis, which focus on empowering women through different means like artisan training and economic support. However, The Woman's Exchange in New Orleans is primarily dedicated to historical preservation and cultural enrichment.

The Urban Enslavement Tour at HermannGrima House looks at the experiences of those who were enslaved in an urban setting how that differed from those enslaved in rural settings and how the contributions of people of African descent have shaped New Orleans. Conde Nast Traveler voted it one of the best tours in New Orleans and the only tour listed from a museum. We believe that nothing tells a story like a home.
