On May 1, Sightlines will cease publication. This isn't a decision arrived at easily or hastily, but one made after long and deep reflection. In considering the shifting landscape of independent journalism, the mutability of the arts landscape, and the flexibility inherent to artistic practice, one thing is clear: Change is inevitable. The current moment is right to make a space for new ways of seeing and reporting on the arts in our dynamic city. It has been an honor to cover the dynamic artists and arts organizations that call Austin home – and to provide a platform for new and established writers to contribute to our cultural conversation. I am proud of the nearly 1600 articles we published and of the 60+ writers whose voices we amplified. Sightlines has thrived over the last five-and-a-half years thanks to the generous and sustaining support of our readers, donors, advertisers, and followers, and the backing of a conscientious and supportive board. Yet the intensity of running an online magazine and a nonprofit organization leaves little time for other project that call to me now. Although publication of new content will cease, Sightlines will remain online as a resource and archive. Thank you to all who joined in the cultural conversation with us. — Jeanne Claire van Ryzin, Sightlines founder and editor (fb)
