I wish with everything in me that I had better news this morning. Phoenix is gone. Very few times in my rescue experience have I had to make the decision for another living being when their fight is over. This time, Phoenix made it for me. For the first time since May 15th, he began to cry out in pain. It was the first time I’ve ever heard a noise come out of him. There were many times in our journey together I thought about how quiet he was, thinking I can’t wait until one day I hear him bark for the first time. I’m still coming to the terms with the fact that there won’t be a “one day” for him anymore. Phoenix’s doctor told me something I’ll never forget… “It’s okay to give up”. “But it’s also okay to keep trying”. And that’s all I needed. For someone to tell me trying was okay. And we did. Thank you to everyone who let us try. To the donations, the shares, the prayers, the advice, it was worth it and he was worth it. We tried until he told us his fight was over. My sweet Phoenix. I would try all over again for you. I know you are in a better place now, pain free, beautiful speckled hair, running through a tall field of grass. Hi all. I know Phoenix was just officially introduced yesterday, and we thankfully were successful in raising enough funds to cover the biopsy procedure he underwent this week. Unfortunately, Phoenix declined overnight. This morning, he was struggling to stand and refused to eat. We were able to get him into Island Pet Urgent Care, where we learned that his body has taken a few steps backward. This is likely due to the toll the procedure took on him. Most dogs have some reserve to fall back on when a procedure weakens them, but Phoenix is skin and bones. He had nothing left to give, and now his body is paying the price. We’re faced with two options: we either give up, or we give it everything we have and admit him into a 24-hour hospital. Being the one to make that decision is a burden I hope none of you ever have to carry. I know we just saved Sadie. I know we just saved Layken. But Phoenix needs us too. This didn’t happen overnight. He has fought through these conditions for months, if not years. He’s proven himself a fighter. He was gaining strength before this setback, and we know he can be strong again. So this is where I start begging. I don’t put a price on lives, but there is a cost to saving them. We are setting a goal to raise $5,000 to give Phoenix every possible chance. If we can do this, we’ll have more time to get answers from his biopsy, and Phoenix will have a chance at the rest of his life. And if we give it our all and it still isn’t enough, at least we’ll know we tried. I don’t know about you, but I feel incredibly honored that we get to fight for this angel of a dog.
