Have you seen me? Help us catch the hatch! It's that time of year when our Salmonfly are getting ready to crawl out of the river and transition into adulthood, leaving behind their exoskeleton known as exuvia. MSI has a Salmonfly monitoring project where community members like you can help us look for these little guys along the banks of the Animas! They like to crawl onto blades of grass, rocks, willow stems, and trees to start their shedding process. This monitoring project allows MSI to compare in-steam populations to hatched populations furthering data collection on benthic macroinvertebrates. The hatch usually occurs anytime from May-June and lasts for a 5-9 day period. With a small window of time like that, it is crucial we catch the hatch on time. If you have seen any Salmonfly exuvia along the banks of the Animas please let us know! Once the hatch begins we will need volunteers to help collect exuvia. If you're interesting in helping, contact jewell@mountainstudies.org or visit our website for more information! (fb)
