Happy Fish Fact Friday! What does a fishery really mean to our communities? It’s more than seafood. For our communities in Western Alaska, the Bering Sea fisheries mean jobs, education, infrastructure, and self-determination. When our pollock, crab, or cod vessel lands a catch, the impact travels far beyond the boat: • Fisheries revenue funds our People Propel, Youth to Work, Mechanic/Welders, Community Service representatives, scholarships & job training. • Profits go back into community infrastructure — from water systems to food banks to internet access. • Local residents work on vessels, in processing plants, and in support roles — building real careers. Through our nonprofit structure, we ensure that the wealth of the Bering Sea stays in the hands of our people. Our fishery isn’t just sustainable — it’s locally owned and community-driven (fb)

Happy Fish Fact Friday! Did you know that golden king crab supports three healthy fisheries in the Bering Sea and Aleutian Islands? Lithodes aequispinus (also known as brown crab or “Goldens”) is fished mainly in the Eastern (EAG) and Western (WAG) Aleutian Islands, but there is also a small state fishery in the Pribilof Islands. Next week, the Crab Plan Team meets to discuss the science behind population trends for these and other BSAI crab species. The outlook for the 2024/25 EAG and WAG seasons (starting in August) is hopeful, but we won’t know for certain until the TAC is announced in July. Learn more about goldens and other crab and follow along with the Crab Plan Team meeting at: https://meetings.npfmc.org/Meeting/Details/3086 (fb)
