Overview
The Kootenai Environmental Alliance (KEA) is a United States nonprofit organization headquartered in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. Established in 1972 and incorporated in 1974, KEA is the oldest nonprofit, membership-supported conservation organization in Idaho[1]. Its mission is to conserve, protect, and restore the environment, with a focus on the Idaho Panhandle and the Coeur d'Alene basin[4].
Mission and Activities
KEA's mission emphasizes the conservation of natural resources, including forests, farmlands, and water bodies. The organization works to protect and restore local watersheds, address climate change impacts, and promote sustainability. Education is a core component of KEA's activities, aiming to empower the community to become informed stewards of the environment[1].
Focus Areas
- Land Conservation: KEA works to preserve northern Idaho's diverse forests and abundant farmlands, recognizing their value as natural resources[1].
- Water Protection: The organization focuses on safeguarding the region's lakes, rivers, and streams, which are vital to local ecosystems[1].
- Climate Action: KEA addresses the local impacts of climate change through community engagement and advocacy for sustainable practices[1].
- Education and Community Engagement: By sharing knowledge and expertise, KEA seeks to build a community that understands and values environmental stewardship[1].
Events and Programs
KEA organizes various events and programs to engage the community in environmental conservation. These include volunteer opportunities such as seedling planting and educational forums like the North Idaho Green Summit[1].
History and Impact
Founded in response to significant environmental degradation in North Idaho, KEA has a long history of advocating for environmental protection through public meetings and community engagement[1]. For decades, it held regular meetings to address local, regional, and national environmental issues, fostering an informed public[1].
Indigenous Acknowledgement
KEA acknowledges and honors the indigenous peoples of the region, including the Schitsu'umsh, Coeur d'Alene Tribe, and other Native American communities. The organization recognizes their sovereignty and supports their efforts in environmental justice[1].
Financial Information
KEA's financial activities reflect its commitment to environmental conservation, with annual revenues and expenses indicating ongoing efforts in community engagement and advocacy[5].

Join Paul and Melinda Farrell of Kay's Photography and KEA for another photo adventure. This one requires either a paddleboard or a boat of some sort. If you want to experience some breathtaking scenery, this one is for you. We'll meet May 31st at 8 am at Sportman & Ski Haus at 95 & Ironwood Drive. From there, we'll carpool as needed to PeeWee Falls, one of the best waterfalls in Eastern Washington State. Please bring your own water floatation and safety gear. A waterproof bag for your camera and/or phone is highly recommended. We also suggest a lunch or snacks since this will be a longer day. Please add it to your calendar and join us! (fb)

Kootenai Environmental Alliance (KEA) is proud to be collaborating with the Panhandle Chapter of Trout Unlimited (PCTU), University of Idaho & the CdA Tribe to sponsor the 2025 Coeur d’Alene Water Festival at McEuen Park on May 29th! The Water Festival is an environmental science-focused educational experience where hundreds of local fifth-grade students are immersed in an outdoor, hands-on environmental science teaching and activities. The Water Festival consists of five stations that the students rotate through which focus on and emphasize the importance of environmental protection, conservation & stewardship to these environmental leaders of the future! This year, stations include: Watershed Science, Animal Tracks, Traditional Tribal Canoes, Nature Trekking, and Native Fisheries. All stations are taught by volunteer professionals from PCTU, KEA, University of Idaho, CdA Tribe, IDFG, IDL, IDEQ, and MORE! (fb)

About the organization

Conserve Protect Restore We work to conserve protect and restore the environment for the health and wellbeing of future generations with a specific emphasis on the Idaho panhandle and Coeur dAlene basin. The great purpose is to set aside a reasonable part of the vanishing wilderness to make certain that generations of Americans yet unborn will know what it is to experience life on undeveloped unoccupied land in the same form and character as the Creator fashioned it. It is a great spiritual experience. I never knew a man who took a bedroll into an Idaho mountainside and slept there under a starstudded summer sky who felt selfimportant that next morning.
