With the weather warming up, many Suffolk County residents have been spending more time outdoors. Whether exploring our parks and hiking local trails or simply enjoying time in our own yards, the risk of tick bites is ever-present during Long Island summers. This month, according to Newsday, the number of people going to emergency rooms in the Northeast for tick bites is the highest since 2019. Suffolk AME is grateful for our hardworking members in Vector Control and Health Services who work hard to both suppress mosquitoes, ticks, and other arthropods that are vectors of human disease, and to collect ticks from each of Suffolk County’s 10 townships and analyze them for the diseases they may carry. Read the article here: https://bit.ly/3Zetj6u Suffolk AME was proud to see our own member, Scott Campbell, Suffolk County’s Chief Entomologist, speak with Newsday about the important work done by our members in the Arthropod-Borne Disease Lab. Sharing his insight, Scott Campbell advised that Ehrlichiosis, a bacterial infection carried by Lone Star ticks, is increasing in western Suffolk over time. Even Lone Star larvae, the smallest and youngest ticks, have made a big impact on people who encounter them, as they cause an intense itch, which many of those bitten mistakenly confuse for chigger bites. "The lone star ticks are out in full force," Campbell said. "The black-legged ticks are starting to come out." Once again, Suffolk AME extends its deepest gratitude to our hardworking members in Vector Control and Health Services who tirelessly monitor and suppress tick-borne diseases and other arthropods known to transmit human ailments. Their dedication plays a vital role in safeguarding our community. (fb)
