Did you know that Memorial Park was built through a true community effort? In 1918, George Hardee of the Rotary Club proposed creating a public park to honor Floridians who died in World War I. Just a year later, the City of Jacksonville bought six acres along the St. Johns River for $125,000 and the planning began! With support from local leaders like Ninah Cummer and Edith Gray, the Citizens Committee raised $52,000 to bring the vision to life, including the iconic Spiritualized Life sculpture.
