Colorado Symphony Association
The Colorado Symphony Association, with the Employer Identification Number (EIN) 84-0511458, is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting and advancing symphonic music in the state of Colorado.
History
The Colorado Symphony Association was formed in response to the financial difficulties faced by the Denver Symphony Orchestra, which filed for bankruptcy protection in 1989. Following this, a group of musicians and community leaders collaborated to establish the Colorado Symphony, marking its first concert on October 27, 1989[1][2]. The Denver Symphony Orchestra eventually merged with the Colorado Symphony in May 1990[1].
Mission and Programs
The organization is committed to providing high-quality orchestral experiences, focusing on both artistic excellence and community enrichment. It performs over 150 concerts annually, offering a diverse range of musical styles and genres, including classical, movie-themed, and alternative concerts[2]. The Colorado Symphony also engages in extensive educational and outreach programs, designed to make live symphonic music accessible to audiences across Colorado[3].
Governance and Operations
The Colorado Symphony operates under a collaborative governance model, with active participation from its musicians, board members, and staff. This model allows for shared leadership and ensures that musicians are integral to the decision-making process[2].
Key Programs
- Education and Outreach: The Colorado Symphony offers various educational programs, including youth concerts, open rehearsals, and virtual education packages. These programs aim to introduce young people to classical music and provide opportunities for local artists[3].
- Community Engagement: The organization partners with local cultural organizations and corporations to foster a broader appreciation of live music, ensuring accessibility for diverse audiences[2].
Musical Structure
The Colorado Symphony comprises over 80 full-time musicians from more than a dozen nations, divided into four main sections: strings, woodwinds, brass, and percussion[4]. The orchestra is led by a principal conductor and frequently collaborates with guest conductors and soloists[4].
Leadership
The Colorado Symphony has been led by notable conductors throughout its history, including Marin Alsop and Andrew Litton. Currently, Peter Oundjian serves as the Principal Conductor[4].
Financial Support
The organization relies on donations and subscriptions to support its mission of providing live symphonic music and promoting music education across Colorado[2][4].

LOTR cast as Colorado Symphony musicians (slightly unhinged edition) We CAN’T WAIT to see you this weekend! 🎶 (fb)

Thank you to all of our attendees from this year's Conducting Business Leadership workshop! 🎶 Yesterday we welcomed over 50 local business leaders on stage with Colorado Symphony musicians in Boettcher Concert Hall for a workshop led by Dr. Raphael von Hoensbroech. By sitting on stage with the orchestra for a rehearsal, attendees explored leadership principles through the lens of a symphony orchestra and both its conductor and musicians. This workshop immersed executives in the world of the orchestra, where the conductor is responsible for team performance yet doesn’t directly participate in operational output, from a group of highly specialized experts. Participants observed the impact of trust on leadership and influence, equipping participants with the tools to cultivate and strengthen teams, departments, and businesses. From President & CEO Daniel Wachter: "Leadership — like music — is as much about listening as it is about directing. It’s about presence, trust, and knowing when to lead and when to let others take the spotlight. I hope today has sparked fresh ideas and inspired new perspectives on how you lead and collaborate." Special thanks to this year's event sponsors, Pax8, U.S. Bank, JPMorganChase Private Bank, PNC, and Holland & Hart Foundation. We can't wait to see you in Boettcher Concert Hall again soon! (fb)
