Puget Sound Sumi Artists

Puget Sound Sumi Artists (PSSA) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization based in Tacoma, Washington, dedicated to promoting and preserving traditional Asian art forms, particularly sumi-e (ink painting), Shodo (Asian brush calligraphy), and Ikebana (flower arranging). Founded in 1986, the organization aims to foster artistic growth and cultural appreciation among its members and within the broader community.

Mission and Activities

PSSA works to:

  • Promote Artistic Friendship: Encourage camaraderie and goodwill among its members.
  • Advance Artistry: Support members in improving their skills in sumi-e and Shodo.
  • Cultural Appreciation: Foster community appreciation for these traditional art forms through exhibitions, demonstrations, and teaching.
  • Access to Masters: Arrange opportunities for members to learn from master sumi-e painters and calligraphers.

Educational and Community Initiatives

  • Teaching Programs: Members offer classes for children and adults, sharing sumi-e and Shodo techniques in community schools.
  • Scholarships: PSSA annually awards a $500 scholarship to students studying Asian culture or studio work influenced by Asian art.
  • Charitable Support: The organization supports local charities, including advocacy for homeless students and families, and a women's shelter.

Exhibitions

PSSA organizes several exhibitions annually in various venues, including galleries, libraries, and cultural centers. These exhibitions showcase a range of techniques and styles, such as Haiga (combinations of haiku poetry and sumi-e), Gongbi (meticulous style), and freehand styles. The organization also collaborates with Japanese artists for combined exhibitions.

Membership

Membership is open to amateur and professional artists aged 18 and older who create original works in sumi-e, Shodo, or related arts, as well as those interested in promoting these art forms in Washington State. PSSA has grown to include over 70 members from communities across the Puget Sound region.
