Development Partner Institute Inc
The Development Partner Institute Inc (DPI) is a global nonprofit organization focused on transforming the mining industry by fostering collaborative relationships among diverse stakeholders. Established in December 2016, DPI was formally launched at the Prospectors & Developers Association of Canada (PDAC) convention in March 2017[1]. The organization continues the innovative work initiated by the Kellogg Innovation Network (KIN)[1].
Mission and Approach
DPI seeks to shift the mining industry's traditional model towards a more integrated and proactive development partnership approach. This involves bringing together stakeholders from across the mining ecosystem to co-create solutions for complex challenges. DPI’s mission centers on creating a new future for mining that is transparent, fair, equal, and inclusive, and wherein mining acts as a genuine partner in global development[3].
Development Partner Framework
The Development Partner Framework (DPF), which underpins DPI's activities, is based on three core principles:
- Shared Purpose: Working with stakeholders to create a shared vision for long-term development in host regions.
- Flourishing Ecosystems: Fostering a robust and resilient natural environment that supports a healthy community and thriving business.
- Competitive Companies, Communities, and Countries: Empowering companies, communities, and countries to reach their full potential and realize their individual definitions of prosperity[1].
Activities and Operations
DPI operates as a lean, agile organization with team members across Australia, the UK, Canada, and the United States. It has Board members and partners from several countries, allowing DPI to work globally, including in Africa, South America, Europe, North America, and the Asia Pacific[2]. DPI engages in multi-stakeholder dialogue, pilots, and initiatives to inspire meaningful change and advance sustainable development solutions in the mining sector[2].
Partnerships
DPI partners with various organizations and companies to enhance its impact. For example, it welcomed Flow Partners as a supporter, focusing on collaborative problem-solving and innovative approaches in the mining sector[3]. DPI also engages with diverse stakeholders, including indigenous communities, to ensure their values and aspirations are integral to mining operations[1].
Impact
By creating a neutral platform for multi-stakeholder discussions, DPI aims to address intractable issues in the mining sector and contribute to economic, social, and environmental outcomes both during and after the life of mines[2]. Its work emphasizes the importance of collaboration and mutual understanding among stakeholders to achieve sustainable development.
