This month, we’re recognizing and honoring the golden-aged participants in our Seniors Program through celebrating Older Americans Month! Designated by President Gerald Ford in 1976, Older Americans Month challenges all Americans, young and old, to celebrate the lives, achievements, and contributions of older adults, promote activities and programs that help keep older adults staying active and engaged, and highlighting opportunities for older adults to find their purpose and effectively navigate the challenges that come with aging. Pine Castle’s Seniors Program was carefully informed and meticulously designed for individuals with intellectual and developmental differences who have retired from community employment and/or whose differences are compounded by age-related changes, such as dementia or physical limitations. Rather than spending time alone or in spaces that do not properly accommodate them, participants in the Seniors Program engage in a variety of person-centered, research-supported activities that focus on reminiscence, cognitive stimulation, social interaction, and maintenance of daily living skills.
