Snake Pit Derby Dames
The Snake Pit Derby Dames, also known as the Coeur d'Alene Roller Derby, were a women's roller derby league based in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. Established in 2008, the organization operated as a nonprofit entity, aiming to provide a supportive environment for women's physical growth, competition, and friendship.
History and Mission
The Snake Pit Derby Dames have been active in the local community since their inception, supporting various local programs such as Bikers Against Child Abuse, the Kootenai Humane Society, and initiatives like the Centennial Trail cleanup. Their presence was notable in local events, including annual parades and the North Idaho State Rodeo, where they participated by scanning tickets in exchange for practice space at the Kootenai County Fairgrounds.
Challenges and Closure
In recent years, the league faced significant challenges in securing a consistent practice venue, which became exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Initially forced to suspend activities at Skate Plaza, the team struggled to find alternative spaces due to concerns over potential damage to floors. Despite exploring various options, including school gyms, outdoor spaces, and unused warehouses, the organization was unable to secure a permanent home.
As a result, by December 2023, it was announced that the Snake Pit Derby Dames would discontinue operations in February 2024 unless a new practice venue was found. The discontinuation of their nonprofit status further complicated their situation, leading to a potential clean break and dissolution of the organization.
Impact and Legacy
The Snake Pit Derby Dames were more than just a sports team; they offered a unique space for personal growth and identity development among their members. Participants were drawn to roller derby for various reasons, including fitness, mental well-being, and personal development, making the team an integral part of many lives. Despite the challenges leading to their potential closure, the Snake Pit Derby Dames remain celebrated for the positive impact they had on the community during their active years.
