American Business Women's Association

The American Business Women's Association (ABWA) is a U.S. nonprofit organization founded on September 22, 1949, with the mission of bringing together businesswomen from diverse occupations. The association aims to provide opportunities for women to grow personally and professionally through leadership, education, networking support, and national recognition.

History

The association was established by Hilary Bufton Jr., a visionary businessman from Kansas City, along with Shirley Cupp, Irma Beisel, and Frances Stuckey. This was a time when societal norms discouraged women from pursuing full-time careers. Bufton recognized the skills women developed during World War II and believed that an organization was needed to support them in achieving their professional goals. The first chapter of ABWA, known as the "Pioneer Chapter," was created on November 21, 1949.

Mission and Activities

ABWA's mission is focused on empowering women through education and networking. The organization offers various programs and resources, including scholarships, professional development opportunities, and networking events. The Stephen Bufton Memorial Educational Fund provides grants and interest-free loans to support women in their educational pursuits. ABWA also hosts conferences and workshops, featuring industry leaders and educators.

Recognition and Impact

Since 1983, September 22 has been celebrated as American Business Women’s Day, recognizing the contributions of women in the business world. This day was formally recognized by a Congressional resolution and a presidential proclamation in 1986. ABWA has played a significant role in promoting gender equality and supporting women in leadership roles across various industries.

Membership and Chapters

The association has over 15,000 members across the United States, with chapters active in all 50 states. Members come from diverse professional backgrounds and are part of local chapters and Express Networks, which provide networking and development opportunities. Membership is available to working women and entrepreneurs seeking professional growth and connection.

Scholarships and Awards

ABWA offers several scholarships, including the President's Scholarship and others valued at $10,000, to support women pursuing graduate studies. The organization also honors outstanding businesswomen through its prestigious Top Ten Business Women of ABWA program, recognizing achievements in career, education, community involvement, and contributions to ABWA.

Current Leadership and Initiatives

Recent initiatives focus on lifelong learning, leadership development, and partnerships with educational institutions to offer master-level business courses. ABWA continues to advocate for women's advancement in the business sector, supporting professional development through its Apex Campus online platform and annual national conferences.
