In Memory of Heath Creech It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Heath Creech, the visionary founder of the Austin Area Heritage Council and the driving force behind Austin’s Martin Luther King Jr. Celebrations. Heath’s legacy began in 1983, when, as a student at the University of Texas, he organized Austin’s first MLK Celebration. His passion for honoring Dr. King’s dream led him to establish the Austin Area Heritage Council in June of 1995, ensuring that Austin’s annual MLK Day celebrations would continue to thrive and grow. With incredible foresight, Heath created a series of events that became Austin’s most inclusive and diverse celebration, bringing together individuals and families from all backgrounds. It was his vision that launched the Youth Legacy Award Scholarship program for high school students, ensuring that Dr. King’s message would inspire future generations. Heath’s dedication also shaped one of the most impactful parts of Austin’s MLK events—the MLK Keynote Address, featuring renowned speakers such as Maya Angelou, Andrew Jackson, Marian Wright Edelman, and Harry Belafonte. His unwavering support for the arts led him to commission artists to create pieces showcased at the Keynote Address, and to ensure that local bands and artists were an integral part of the celebrations. Heath Creech was a visionary, a dreamer, a doer, and a mover—a man whose passion and dedication built a lasting tradition that continues to unite and inspire our community. Rest in peace, Heath. Until we meet again. (fb)
