History

The organization's origins trace back to 2017 when the founders adopted a chicken named "Funky" from the Sacramento SPCA. Although Funky unfortunately passed away at a young age due to cancer, his adoption inspired the founders to establish a sanctuary dedicated to rescuing farm animals in his memory. Funky Chicken Rescue Corp officially became a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, aiming to honor Funky's legacy by continuing to rescue and care for animals in need.

Operations

The organization operates a sanctuary where over 200 farm animals, including cows, pigs, turkeys, sheep, dogs, cats, ducks, alpacas, emus, goats, chickens, and a peacock, have been rescued. These animals are primarily sourced from shelters, local SPCA facilities, and private rehomings. Funky Chicken Rescue Corp relies on a small family of caretakers to manage the sanctuary and ensure the well-being of the animals.

Recognition

In 2024, Funky Chicken Rescue Corp received significant recognition as Lowe's "Hometown" Community Project of the Year. This distinction included donations from Lowe's to enhance the sanctuary, specifically by constructing a new 1,400 sq. ft. patio space intended for visitors.

Governance

The organization is led by a board of directors. As of 2023, Eric Smith serves as the board chair. Funky Chicken Rescue Corp operates under a nonprofit governance structure, although specific details regarding board orientation, CEO oversight, ethics, and board performance assessments are not publicly disclosed.
