Meet "The Shelter Oak" 🌳 This tree has been nominated in the Story Tree category for the Austin Tree of the Year Awards. The person who nominated this tree shares, "More than a tree, it’s a sanctuary for unhoused neighbors who gather beneath its wide, sheltering branches. Around its trunk, they share board games, leave offerings at a small altar, and exchange kindness in a community forged in hardship. In a city racing toward growth and often forgetting those at its margins, The Shelter Oak holds space for resilience, dignity, and human connection. It reminds us that home is not just walls or roofs, but found in roots, shade, shared moments, and the quiet strength of survival. This tree is a powerful symbol of hope and belonging for all who seek refuge beneath its arms." Every tree has a story worth telling. We're inspired by all the stories we've received so far. Share your tree story with us - Nominate a tree by July 30th✨ Learn more: treefolks.org/toty (fb)

Hey y’all, we hope you’re hanging in there 🦥 Wednesday’s storm took quite a toll on the city’s canopy. While we continue to assess the damage, what’s most important now is that we look out for each other. We can learn a lot from trees during moments like these. Trees have the unique ability to communicate with each other and share resources through a sophisticated network formed symbiotically by fungi, otherwise known as a “mychorrizal network” 🍄🧬 So, check in on your neighbors, and take good care! Like trees, this city is built on resilience. If you’re looking for ways to get involved and help out - we’re still seeking volunteers for our Tree Care Event at Graham Elementary tomorrow from 9am-11am.
