Background

Inspired by his visit to the Kevin-Sunburst Oilfield in northern Montana, Shuck was moved to take action against the environmental and community impacts of orphaned wells. This encounter led him to create a collaborative approach to address the issue, resulting in the establishment of the Well Done Foundation as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. The foundation operates with a mission to combat climate change by sealing these wells and restoring the surrounding land.

Activities

Since its inception, the Well Done Foundation has successfully plugged over 43 orphaned oil and gas wells across multiple states, including Montana, Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Virginia, Oklahoma, Texas, Louisiana, Kansas, Colorado, Wyoming, and California. Their efforts have resulted in the immediate elimination of significant amounts of greenhouse gas emissions, with savings of over 500,000 metric tons of CO2e. They work in partnership with local and state governments, farmers, landowners, and corporate sponsors to locate wells, measure emissions, and restore the land after plugging.

Methods and Partnerships

The foundation employs a method involving the use of cement to seal the wells, ensuring the protection of groundwater and reducing methane emissions. They have developed a carbon methodology in collaboration with the American Carbon Registry, which provides a financial tool to support further sealing projects.
