Well Done Foundation Inc
The Well Done Foundation Inc is a U.S. nonprofit organization dedicated to plugging abandoned oil and gas wells, primarily focusing on reducing greenhouse gas emissions and protecting the environment. Established in 2019, the foundation was founded by Curtis Shuck, who serves as its Chairman.
Background
Inspired by his visit to the Kevin-Sunburst Oilfield in northern Montana, Shuck was moved to take action against the environmental and community impacts of orphaned wells. This encounter led him to create a collaborative approach to address the issue, resulting in the establishment of the Well Done Foundation as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. The foundation operates with a mission to combat climate change by sealing these wells and restoring the surrounding land.
Activities
Since its inception, the Well Done Foundation has successfully plugged over 43 orphaned oil and gas wells across multiple states, including Montana, Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Virginia, Oklahoma, Texas, Louisiana, Kansas, Colorado, Wyoming, and California. Their efforts have resulted in the immediate elimination of significant amounts of greenhouse gas emissions, with savings of over 500,000 metric tons of CO2e. They work in partnership with local and state governments, farmers, landowners, and corporate sponsors to locate wells, measure emissions, and restore the land after plugging.
Methods and Partnerships
The foundation employs a method involving the use of cement to seal the wells, ensuring the protection of groundwater and reducing methane emissions. They have developed a carbon methodology in collaboration with the American Carbon Registry, which provides a financial tool to support further sealing projects. Well Done Foundation also partners with various companies and organizations to provide training for workers in methane measurement and monitoring technologies.
Expansion and Impact
The organization is expanding its reach nationally and plans to extend its efforts internationally, aiming to tackle similar environmental issues in other regions. Their work has significant environmental benefits, reducing harmful methane emissions and preserving water, air, and soil quality.
Leadership and Team
The foundation is led by Curtis Shuck, with Stacey Shuck managing regulatory compliance and project coordination. The team includes experts in environmental management, financial analysis, and project management, all working towards the shared goal of mitigating the effects of abandoned wells.
Core Initiatives
- Carbon Offset Programs: The Well Done Foundation offers carbon offset units, allowing individuals and companies to support their efforts and claim emissions reductions.
- Environmental Education and Training: They provide training programs for methane measurement specialists and engage in educational initiatives to raise awareness about the importance of plugging orphan wells.
