Description

AL Dia Foundation

The AL Dia Foundation is a nonprofit organization affiliated with AL DÍA News, based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It was established to support the development of multicultural, bilingual, and entrepreneurial journalists and media leaders, particularly focusing on underrepresented communities like Latinos.

Purpose and Activities

The foundation aims to create an ecosystem that helps individuals from diverse backgrounds, including Latinos and young professionals, pursue careers in journalism and media business management. It collaborates with educational institutions to train students in multimedia, multicultural, multilingual, and entrepreneurial journalism practices. This effort is designed to diversify voices in the media by empowering a new generation of journalists to include the American Latino Experience in U.S. journalism in the 21st century.

Awards and Recognition

One of the notable initiatives of the AL Dia Foundation is the "Félix Varela" Award. This award honors the memory of Father Félix Varela y Morales, a pioneer in establishing Spanish-language newspapers in the United States. The "Félix Varela" Award recognizes American journalists who excel in covering multicultural issues, particularly those related to Latino communities, through various media outlets, including print and digital platforms in both English and Spanish.

Leadership

The foundation is chaired by Hernán Guaracao, who is also the founder, editor, and publisher of AL DÍA News. Guaracao previously served as the president of the National Association of Hispanic Publications in the U.S.

Tax Exemption

The AL Dia Foundation is tax-exempt, having received its tax exemption status in October 2007. Its Employer Identification Number (EIN) is 68-0657118.
