Phi Delta Theta Fraternity

Overview

Phi Delta Theta (ΦΔΘ), commonly known as Phi Delt, is an international social fraternity founded on December 26, 1848, at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. It is known for its commitment to brotherhood and community service.

Founding and Early History

The fraternity was founded by six students, known as the "Immortal Six": Robert Morrison, John McMillan Wilson, Robert Thompson Drake, John Wolfe Lindley, Ardivan Walker Rodgers, and Andrew Watts Rogers. They established the fraternity under three principal objectives: "the cultivation of friendship among its members, the acquirement individually of a high degree of mental culture, and the attainment personally of a high standard of morality"[1][2].

The Bond of Phi Delta Theta

On December 30, 1848, the "Immortal Six" signed The Bond of Phi Delta Theta, which has remained unchanged to this day. It is a foundational document unique among fraternities, and its signing is an essential part of initiation[1][4][5].

Growth and Expansion

Phi Delta Theta expanded rapidly in the late 19th century, with significant growth attributed to Walter B. Palmer and George Banta, known as the "Second Founders"[2][3]. The first Canadian chapter was established at McGill University on April 5, 1902[3]. Today, Phi Delta Theta has over 200 active chapters and colonies across the United States and Canada[2].

Philanthropy and Notable Members

The fraternity's national philanthropy is the Live Like Lou Foundation, which supports research and awareness for Lou Gehrig's disease, named after Phi Delta Theta brother Lou Gehrig[1][2]. Notable members include astronaut Neil Armstrong, actor Burt Reynolds, and the 23rd President of the United States, Benjamin Harrison[2].

Modern Developments

In recent decades, Phi Delta Theta has emphasized eliminating alcohol from chapter facilities and promoting a values-based organization[5]. The fraternity continues to grow and has more than 160,000 living alumni[1][5].
