With plans to open a massive, for-profit immigrant detention center in Michigan, ICE is quietly expanding its capacity in the Midwest. New reporting from @mlivenews details how the agency plans to reopen a previously closed state prison in Baldwin, Michigan, and turn it into the region’s largest ICE detention center. The North Lake Correctional Facility, which has been closed four times, is now being reopened under a lucrative contract with the private prison company GEO Group. When it opens, North Lake’s 1,800 beds will make it one of the largest detention facilities in the country. Despite decades of documented abuse and deadly medical neglect in ICE detention, expansion of this system is prioritizing profit over human beings. We’re very concerned this facility will increase ICE activity in the region.
