With the introduction of the printing press it became affordable to mass produce printed material and one of the results was sheets of paper with prosceniums scenery and characters which buyers could paint and assemble at home. In the 19th century toy theatre became a huge sensation and people throughout Europe began to stage little tiny shows in their parlors.
