Knights of Columbus

The Knights of Columbus is a global Catholic fraternal service order with an extensive presence in the United States, known for its charitable activities and fraternal support. It was founded on March 29, 1882, by Blessed Michael J. McGivney at St. Mary's Parish in New Haven, Connecticut.

Founding and Mission

Founded as a mutual benefit society, the Knights of Columbus aimed to provide financial security to its members and their families, particularly in the context of late 19th-century America, where many Catholics faced discrimination and exclusion from mainstream organizations. The organization's core principles include Charity, Unity, Fraternity, and Patriotism. Over time, it has expanded to support various charitable causes worldwide, including refugee relief, Catholic education, and disaster response.

Insurance Services

The Knights of Columbus runs a highly rated insurance program, exclusively for its members and their families. This program includes life insurance, annuities, long-term care insurance, and disability insurance. As of 2023, the Order underwrites more than two million insurance contracts, totaling over $121 billion in life insurance in force.

Charitable Activities

The organization is renowned for its extensive charitable work. Some key initiatives include:

  • Disaster Relief: Providing aid to victims of natural disasters, such as floods, earthquakes, and hurricanes.
  • Refugee Support: Offering humanitarian aid to persecuted Christians and other religious minorities worldwide, including significant efforts in the Middle East and Ukraine.
  • Health Initiatives: Supporting health programs, such as donating ultrasound machines to pregnancy centers, and managing national blood drives.
  • Education and Youth: Offering scholarships for seminarians and supporting educational programs for Catholic students.
  • Community Programs: Initiatives like "Coats for Kids" provide winter coats to needy children.
Global Presence

As of 2024, the Knights of Columbus boasts over 2.1 million members globally, with more than 17,000 local councils. Women and youth are also involved through auxiliary groups such as the Columbiettes and the Columbian Squires.

Leadership and Influence

Currently led by Supreme Knight Patrick E. Kelly and Supreme Chaplain William E. Lori, the Knights of Columbus continue to play a significant role in advocating for Catholic views on social and political issues. The organization's influence extends to supporting the Vatican and promoting Catholic social teachings through its financial services and charitable works.

Historical Significance

The Knights of Columbus has a rich history of supporting Catholic causes and fighting against religious and ethnic prejudices throughout the 20th century. It continued to provide relief during major wars, including World War I and World War II, by operating support centers for soldiers. Today, it remains one of the largest and most influential Catholic fraternal organizations in the world.
