I-Scholar Initiative (ISI)
I-Scholar Initiative (ISI) is a United States-based nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting high-achieving yet financially disadvantaged African students in pursuing graduate studies abroad. Registered as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit in Texas in early 2020, ISI focuses on empowering young African scholars by facilitating access to fully funded scholarships at top-tier international universities and providing them with mentorship and guidance throughout the application process[1][2][5].
Mission and Objectives
The organization’s primary mission is to identify, prepare, and mentor self-driven, deserving African students to secure advanced-level academic opportunities in select countries. By leveraging a network of partnering members and volunteers, ISI seeks to help these students overcome financial barriers, particularly by funding necessary graduate admission exams such as the GRE and GMAT and supporting non-STEM graduates as well[1][2][5].
ISI aims to build a younger generation of African leaders, innovators, and change agents who will contribute to the development and transformation of the continent. The initiative emphasizes career advancement through education and aims to create sustainable impact by fostering a community of scholars with shared vision and passion for societal progress[2][5].
History and Development
The concept behind ISI originated from the life experience and commitment of its founders to invest privately in the career development of Nigerian and other African graduates. Early efforts involved mentoring personal acquaintances and mentees, primarily supporting their preparation for graduate school admission tests and facilitating funding for those exams[2][5].
As the impact of these efforts became evident—with over 70% of the supported scholars obtaining fully funded graduate placements at various universities—ISI formalized its operations by registering as a nonprofit in Texas. The formation of a Management Committee and Board of Trustees established its governance structure to support scalability and sustainability[5].
Programs and Services
ISI provides a comprehensive scholarship initiative that goes beyond funding. The organization assists scholars not only in securing scholarships but also in offering continuous mentorship, guidance, and access to networks that ensure their academic and professional success. This support includes:
- Preparation and funding for graduate admission standardized tests (e.g., GRE, GMAT)
- Mentoring by experienced professionals and volunteers
- Assistance in scholarship application processes
- Access to networks of scholars and academic partners worldwide[1][2][5]
Governance and Leadership
ISI is governed by a committed team of accomplished leaders who serve on a voluntary basis. The board and management include professionals from diverse sectors such as academia, corporate business, and healthcare. Notable leadership figures include executives and experts affiliated with organizations such as ExxonMobil, University of Ibadan, Amazon AWS, and Societe Generale, reflecting a broad base of expertise and support for the initiative’s mission[4].
Impact
Since its inception, ISI has played a critical role in enabling African students with limited resources to access quality higher education globally. The organization’s strategic investments and mentorship have resulted in a significant number of scholars enrolling in fully funded graduate programs abroad, positioning them to become future leaders and innovative contributors to their communities[5].
I-Scholar Initiative continues to serve as a vital platform for nurturing academic excellence and leadership among young Africans, transforming individual dreams into realities that can benefit society at large.
