Description

Animal Refuge Foundation

The Animal Refuge Foundation, often referred to as ARFhouse, is a Texas-based 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to caring for abandoned and abused dogs. Established to provide a sanctuary for these animals, ARFhouse operates primarily as a no-kill, care-for-life canine sanctuary. The organization is committed to accepting dogs regardless of age or breed, focusing on providing necessary care and finding permanent homes for them when possible.

History and Mission

ARFhouse received its 501(c)(3) determination from the IRS in 1992, marking the beginning of its official status as a non-profit entity. The foundation's mission centers on advocating for dogs without homes, ensuring they receive proper medical care, and striving to rehome them. However, some dogs remain at the sanctuary for life due to various reasons.

Operations

Located on 45 acres, ARFhouse has the capacity to care for approximately 350 dogs at any given time. The sanctuary offers ample space for its residents, allowing them to live and play in a safe environment. Dogs are spayed or neutered and receive full vaccination, along with any additional medical care deemed necessary by the on-site veterinarian. The facility is supported by twelve paid staff members and numerous volunteers, with five staff members residing on site to ensure continuous care for the dogs.

Adoptive Process

ARFhouse maintains an active adoption program, working closely with volunteers and partners to facilitate the placement of dogs into suitable homes. They collaborate with platforms like PetFinder to match dogs with potential adopters. Despite its rural setting, the organization has become more visible over time, attracting adopters from wider areas, including the Dallas/Fort Worth metropolitan area.

Community Engagement

The organization engages with the community through events and partnerships, such as appearances at local PetSmart locations, to promote their mission and facilitate adoptions. ARFhouse also offers programs like the "Be a Pal" initiative, allowing supporters to virtually adopt and sponsor dogs for a monthly fee, receiving quarterly updates and photos in return.

Ethical Policy

The foundation adheres to a strict no-euthanasia policy unless medical suffering cannot be alleviated, emphasizing a commitment to preserving life whenever possible. This stance aligns with its broader mission of providing sanctuary and advocating for dogs in need.

Overall, ARFhouse plays a vital role in Texas as a sanctuary and advocate for abandoned and abused dogs, working tirelessly to ensure these animals receive the care and love they deserve.
