We are in week two of a special seven-week series for #FlashbackFriday with a set of interviews conducted with area veterans in the early 2000s by students at Vision_Tek (now Smoky Valley Virtual Charter School). We are posting 2-3 of these interviews each Friday (with cleaned-up audio and newly packaged to present online), so that the series will conclude on #IndependenceDay this year on Friday, July 4. This week, we present the 2003 interviews with: -Lee Spellman: Served 1950-1952 during the Korean War. Spellman worked in the Korean finance office, ensuring soldiers were paid every 15 days. While he worked five miles from the front line, during the war he lived in tents to be able to move if needed at a moment's notice. -William Taylor, Sr.: Serving 1942-1945, Taylor had a unique war experience in WWII, playing trombone in a Replacement Center Band. He would play USO dances and concerts and help to promote war support on bond-selling trips. During these experiences, he once provided music for Roosevelt's funeral train and shared a stage with Bette Davis. Though never seeing direct combat (he was two years in service before firing a gun), he made important contributions to morale and financial support of the war effort through his performances. Thanks to all our veterans - past and present - for your dedicated service! You will be able to see this entire series as the videos are posted on the museum YouTube at: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLGOndVqZr6xa72lWcDRHmnjyLzmUaWnED #ToTheStarsKS #Lindsborg #lindsborgks #lbk #visitlindsborg #veterans #VeteranHistory #warhistory (fb)
We are going into #MemorialDayWeekend, so at the museum we are using the occasion to mark the start of a special seven-week series for #FlashbackFriday - a set of interviews conducted with area veterans in the early 2000s by students at Vision_Tek (now Smoky Valley Virtual Charter School). We will be posting 2-3 of these interviews each Friday (with cleaned-up audio and newly packaged to present online), so the series will conclude on #IndependenceDay this year on Friday, July 4. This week, we present the 2003 interviews with: -Ruth Johnson: Served in the Army Air Forces WAC (Women's Army Corps) 1944-1946. Service was in Fort Des Moines, then as a touring performer on trumpet and bugle, and finally closing out offices at the end of WWII in Europe. -Tommy Logue: Served in the Army 1953-1955. He finished basic training as the Korean War drew to a close, so was assigned as a radio operator at an early warning site in Boston. -Earl Nelson: Served in a U.S. Army Armored Field Artillery battalion 1942-1945. He saw combat in Europe in WWII, was part of the Battle of the Bulge in 1944, and witnessed the aftermath of the Holocaust at Dachau after the end of the war.
