American International School of Lesotho

The American International School of Lesotho (AISL) is a nonprofit, independent coeducational day school located in Maseru, Lesotho. Founded in 1991, the school provides an American-style educational program for students from preschool (age 3) through grade 8.

Organization and Governance

AISL is governed by a Board of Advisors, with five members elected by the AISL Parents' Association and two appointed by the U.S. Ambassador. The Board may also include additional members with specific skills beneficial to the school. This governance structure allows for active involvement from the parent community in organizing events and activities.

Curriculum and Education

The school's curriculum follows the standards established by American Education Reaches Out (AERO), similar to those used in U.S. public schools. Academic courses include language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies, complemented by music, French language, technology, library research, art, and physical education. AISL is accredited by the Middle States Association (MSA) and conducts regular MAP testing for academic assessment.

Diversity and Student Body

AISL's student body is diverse, representing over 20 different nationalities. Approximately 17% of students are U.S. citizens, while 32% are host country nationals, and the remainder are third-country nationals. This diversity enriches the school environment, fostering mutual understanding and cooperation among students from different backgrounds.
