Southeast Regional Cooperative Inc
Overview
The Southeast Regional Cooperative Inc (EIN: 822707649) is a nonprofit organization that operates as a member-led Type I Supporting Organization. It is comprised of food banks from seven southeastern states, working in partnership with Feeding America. The organization is headquartered in East Point, Georgia, and has received a 4-star rating from Charity Navigator[4].
Mission
The mission of Southeast Regional Cooperative Inc is to facilitate donations and purchase fresh produce at the lowest possible cost, while providing a consistent demand to growers, distributors, and other supply chain participants. This enables it to offer a consistent supply of fresh produce to its member food banks, enhancing their ability to combat food insecurity in the Southeast region[2].
Activities
The cooperative aggregates surplus produce from the Southeast and other parts of the country, matching it with the demand from its member food banks. It manages a contracted mixing facility where straight commodity truckloads are aggregated and repackaged into mixed produce truckloads, which are then distributed to its members. By reducing the average cost of acquisition and improving the variety and freshness of produce, the cooperative increases the purchasing power of supported food banks[1][2].
Governance
Southeast Regional Cooperative Inc is governed by a Board of Directors, comprising leadership from its member food banks. This governance structure ensures that the interests of the cooperative's members are represented equitably. The organization operates based on the principles of equity and transparency[2].
Financials
The cooperative's financial operations reflect its commitment to its mission. Its revenues are primarily derived from contributions and program services. The organization has managed millions in revenue and expenses, with significant portions allocated to its core activities. Executive compensation and other salaries form a small percentage of total expenses[3].
Impact
By connecting the agribusiness industry with food banks and nonprofits, Southeast Regional Cooperative Inc plays a critical role in addressing food insecurity across the Southeast. Its operations not only help improve food availability but also contribute to the local economy by supporting growers and distributors[2].
